The Rio Maddalena is full of myths, which relate the course of Columbia’s history. In Tina Rietzschel’s work, the river is present as the chronicler of a country, which constantly alternated between appropriation and self-preservation. Like religion, here nature is also syncretic, merging foreign with own. A symbol of this are the hippopotami who, originally imported from Africa by Pablo Escobar for his villa, later broke free and made their home in the river. (Raimund Kühnel)
