The title of this work refers to Aokigahara, a forest at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan. An unusually large number of people visit this densely forested place in order to commit suicide, with the result that this 35 km² area is known as the ›Suicide Forest‹. In his work, Schittko evokes the extraordinary atmosphere of the forest with his images and gives the feeling of being lost a painterly expression. Using a sublimation method on the image carriers made of wood or chipboard, he succeeds in finding an appropriate visual language for this sensitive theme. (Sonja Wunderlich)
