Talk: On the Art of Documenting Moving Image Works EN

The documentation of moving image works has currently come up against a barrier: Although these works unfold their presentation displays in various situations and exhibition spaces, their live-experience is absent from the conventional documentation of art. In my lecture, I will introduce ›reframing‹ as an approach of documenting art that includes the live experience of the exhibition. This approach fosters a broader understanding of the art work.

According to Judith Butler, gender identity emerges as the result of a repeated ritual experience. The panel surveys the potential of (video-)performances in this mechanism for creating reality and, using historical and current positions, investigates the various modes of seeing as well as the redefinition of bodies and the breaking away from expectations.

Claire Bishop (Professor of contemporary art, New York City)

Claire Bishop’s current project ›OS XXI‹ examines the influence exerted by digital technology on contemporary art and performance since 1989. She investigates the changes in our experiences of time, the historicity and our awareness vis-à-vis current performances, artistic research and the question of an utopian modernism. In her project ›Black Box, White Cube – Fifty Shades of Grey?‹, she continues her investigation of the current trend of presenting performance and dance in an exhibition context.

The panel considers the theoretical and aesthetic framework of performances – both live and preserved as video. Their starting point is the proposition that performances do not depend upon the physical presence of performers and spectators, but involve a mediating third instance.

The panel is a cooperation with medienwerk.nrw.

Cologne artist Stefanie Klingmann’s performance Parcours was specially conceived for the VIDEONALE.Parcours and will be performed at its opening. »I love video, I love new media, big screens and impressive sounds. It’s more than just watching. It touches you deeply, directly to the heart. It’s so extraordinary, it’s the real feeling of being alive« is what she will express in the role of a museum supervisor. She will lead the way to the various Parcours-stations on foot and will explore the route as well as selected artistic works performatively.

Are the charged words the performer’s own self-expression or are we listening to the adaptation of a song text? In performance and video, the relationship between speech, intimacy and the expression of personality as well as appropriation as a method are investigated.

Performance: COOL FOR YOU: MOOD MANAGEMENT

COOL FOR YOU is the music/performance project of artist Vika Kirchenbauer. In decomposing harmonies as colonisers, she discusses the simultaneous consumption and exclusion of otherness, reframing bodies as heat signatures and sampling from
infrared dreams.

Representatives of their respective fields talk about the individual stages – legal, economical, conservational – that a moving image work must pass through to reach the market, change its owner and sometimes maybe even find its place in a collection where it can, as a work, outlive the rapid technological change.

In the permanent battle for attention in the flood of digital ›image overload‹ there are generally no winners or losers. Despite continually optimised methods of self-presentation, it remains unclear who is performing for whom, who is viewed by whom. The panel considers other (subversive) strategies of reacting against the ever-present availability of things unique.

The panel takes place in cooperation with medienwerk.nrw.

In a post-Fordist place like ours, is every work activity a performance? If the job market is based upon (self-)representation and makes use of performative strategies, which one can learn in workshops, where is the critical potential of art to be found? Early performance art developed in opposition to the economisation of art. How does current artistic practice relate to the concept of economy, which is proliferating all spheres of activity, and should it react to this at all?

The panel looks at the question of ›documentation as artistic practice‹. When is the documentation of a performance a mere document and under what conditions does an autonomous work of art come into being? Concrete Park is a project involving the
collaboration of visual artists, performers and film makers at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (HZT). The film Concrete Park is the filmic and physical result of this cooperation.

Performance: Lisa Domin, IT’S SO SAD THE GIRAFFE IS DEAD

The mysterious suicide of a giraffe in Cairo’s Giza Zoo during the Egyptian revolution. The death provoked a worldwide media response. It’s So Sad The Giraffe Is Dead dramatises the macabre coherence between the animal’s behaviour and the situation of the populace.

Performance: striKING 5.0

No curtain goes up. We find ourselves in the middle of an inside-out opera, a TV duel, found footage collages, family dramas, self-destroying prose and performance. Is the time ripe for a manifesto? International Performance Lab striKING addresses the fucking G-word and shows the result as performative miniatures.

»The fact of being at a crossroads, at the frontier of two separate identities, underlies all my work on film«, says Adrian Paci. Paci’s work is tied up with his own biographical and everyday experiences of flight and migration and highlights the fate of those who find themselves between worlds. The focus is not on individual fates but on universal questions of truth and fiction, personal and
collective, traumas and the telling of tales. Paci’s work has been exhibited in Moderna Museet Stockholm, Tel Aviv Contemporary Art Centre, Bloomberg Space in London and Kunsthaus Zürich as well as the Venice Biennale (2005), Manifesta 3, Ljubljana and the Tate Modern, London.

The current era of ›global cities‹ is shaped by new geographies and social relationships, multiplied by technology and economy. But how do artists react to
these conditions? Performing the City, with its focus on artistic intervention in global metropoles like Belo Horizonte, New York, Santiago de Chile and Seoul, shows how daily routine is interrupted for a moment by artistic performances, and new tactics of spatial production are tested.
